Participation Tracks (NEW!)
Starting this year we now offer three participation tracks. Whether you consider yourself a composer, performer, composer-performer, electronic music investigator, or are entirely new to electroacoustic music, we encourage you to apply to whichever track listed below best fits your interest.
New Works Artists (NWA) are composers, performers, or composer-performers who would like to collaboratively work on a new piece to be premiered at SPLICE Institute.
NWA Composers will compose a work for either an NWA performer or SPLICE Institute faculty member. Please note that electronics will be run from stage by the performer.
NWA Performers will perform a new piece by an NWA composer and a limited number may also perform alongside SPLICE Institute faculty.
NWA Composer-Performers will compose a new piece for themself to premiere at the institute.
Please note that NWA opportunities are limited. Everyone who selects "New Works Artist" will also be considered for an "Ensemble Artist" or "Workshop Artist" slot if a New Works Artist slot is not possible.
Ensemble Artists will participate in one of the SPLICE Institute improvisation ensembles that includes a concert performance on Saturday afternoon, AND participate in workshops and other activities. Ensemble examples include:
SPLICE Creative Music Band
Splice Creative Music Band is an improvisation ensemble comprising acoustic and electronic musicians. The term Creative Music refers to the approach of music making established and embodied by the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. CMB seeks to honor the AACM and will rehearse existing repertoire throughout the week that incorporates systems of improvisation.
Electronic Improv Ensemble
Through daily performances, we will explore the unique musical properties that emerge in and from instrumental systems capable of automation and increased agency. Our studies will include both free-improvisation and guided improvisational scores. Participants should have experience performing electronics, which could include fully electronic, either digital or analog, or hybrid electronic-acoustic systems, and they should be prepared to bring their instrument/system. Experience in improvisation is welcomed, but not required.
Workshop Artists will participate in workshops and other activities but not perform.
All workshops (from beginner to advanced), lectures, and non-ensemble hands-on activities are open to ALL participants in each of the three tracks.
