Notes

Ethan Isaac : Waypoints
Waypoints is an improvisatory work in which the performer is guided through generated rhythms created through the programming language TidalCycles. Live pitch tracking is employed to create structure, triggering these rhythms based on a preset number of pitches. The goal of this piece is to establish a more balanced space for both the performer and composer, which is something I find myself searching for more and more. Traditional notation is utilized to provide gestures to the performer, serving as waypoints on a path.

Indigo Knecht : solastalgia
solastalgia describes the feeling of distress due to change in one’s environment, such as despair after natural disasters. It is often accompanied by a feeling of helplessness and a loss of identity. Text is from Emily Dickinson's "The Murmuring of Bees, has ceased" (1867/8).

Chris Cresswell : Too Late in the Evening
This work, for alto flute, soprano, and electronics, features the poetry of Syracuse poet, Tim Carter. His 2019 book, Remains memorializes his late mother with materials and interviews collected from the family and friends, that are transformed into lyrical poetry. This work, Too Late in the Evening, explores the same source material, cassette recordings from Tim’s childhood, to create a sonic soundscape for Tim’s words to be sung. This work was originally written for the SPLICE Institute in Kalamazoo, MI and will be workshopped in June 2023.

Willyn Whiting : CHIRP
CHIRP depicts a sunrise in three short scenes. It explores two birdsong quotations from Olivier Messiaen’s Orchestral work Réveil des oiseaux (1953), the Nightjar, representing the night, and the Woodlark, representing the day. Through various means I try to create a liminal space between Messiaen’s interpretation of birdsong and my own.

Jacob McFarland : re:sponse
In re:sponse the musicians chose from a bank of musical gestures to create a piece that will be different each time it is performed. The musicians are instructed to listen to each other and the electronics to influence what and how they play.
